Monday 20th August

Golden Sands Resort Penang

Grant went down around 6:30am to collect his bag from the bell hop. We are more than pleased to have all his stuff back in our possession.

We went to Gurney Plaza today.  A check of the app showed that a Grab will cost 14RM. Before booking one Grant asked a local cabbie at the hotel, what he charged. He said 13RM so we said yes, thinking that he was setting his price to be just a little more competitive than the Grab option. The old style cabs here are pretty rough. This one had used tussues in the door well of both backdoors - nice. We decided never again. On arrival at the plaza, Grant paid the driver in cash and was out before Pip. The driver told Pip the fare was 30RM. Pip called out Grant. Grant waved off the driver in a way to make it clear we were not falling for that one. The cab was gone almost immediately, never to be used by us again, anyway. This Gurney Plaza has always been a favourite of ours. It is in the process of a refurbishment and although the old parts are not too bad, the difference between old and new is quite startling.
Grant had a haircut at the plaza. The haircut turned into an additional scalp massage, then a wash, then some fancy treatment, then another wash, then another quick scalp massage and a final tidy up. Grant thinks he supplied the salon's wages bill today.

We snuck into a McDonalds to get internet access and called up a Grab (same as Uber) taxi. It arrived on time and this time the fare was that shown on the app. Nearer dinner time we popped down to the lobby bar for some cocktails. With a second cocktail in hand we moved to the dining area. There we had a very nice dinner buffet at a cost of 82RM or around $40 all up for us both.
